PART I
OLD TERISHA
1. TERISHA TURNER, (sometimes spelled and probably pronounced Terr’ isha. since the nickname was Terry) first patented 200 acres on the south side of the James river, 15 Dec. 1749 (Patents No. 27, 1748‑9, p. 5 19) and was of Albemarle Co. in Oct. 1751 when he and his wife, Sarah, sold to Michael Rowland of Cumberland Co. the same 200 A. at the heads of Deep Run, Run. a branch of Muddy Creek. adjoining William Ferrises and Nicholas Davis. (Cumberland Deed Bk. 1:442) He was granted 136 A. on the south branches of the Hardware river in 1760 which he and Sarah sold In 1777. On 5 Oct. 1770 Terisha Turner of the parish and county of Amherst paid L I 55. 0 to John Scott and Margaret (Fry) his wife for I 557 A. on the branches of Parroge (sic) creek.
He also was the owner of several hundred acres on Briery Fork of Green creek, part of which he sold in 1790 to Benjamin Harris.
His descendants are eligible for SAR and DAR by virtue of having furnished 170’lbs. of Beef, 661 lbs. of “Flower” and 2I lbs. of Bacon for the Militia on June 21 and 22, 1781. (Public Service Claims. Amherst Co. Court Booklet. p. 23)
He appeared on the 1783 tax list with 5 in his family and 12 slaves. 1n 1800 he was taxed for 2 white males, 7 negro’s, and 5 horses. (Amherst Co. Pers. Prop. Bk. A‑1800) Old Terisha died owning several thousand acres, not only in Virginia but in North Carolina as well. He called himself “ancient” in his will, written 7 May 1793 “ and proved 19 April 1802. (Amherst Bk. 4:34) ( Though some make it ten or more years later, a 1948 pedigree from the Institute of American Genealogy places his birth date at 1705‑1710 and suggest that he might have been the immigrant.) His sons William and Henry were named execs of his estate and trustees for his son George, whom he deemed “not capable to manage his affairs when it should fall to him. “
It to said that his wife, Sarah, was the dau. of John and Mary (___________) Wimpey. Her will was dated 14 Nov. 1806 and proved 16 Feb. 1607 by Wm. H. and Samuel Turner. (Amherst Bk. 4:274)
Eight children were mentioned in Terisha’s will as living in 1793. To that list has been added the young Terisha who d. 1772. (Inv. . Albemarle Bk. 2:290) When one considers that his widow.
Frances (Lyon), wasn’t old enough to remarry (28 Dec. 1772) without her parents’ consent (Bailey Genealogy), they must have been young. Old Terisha and her father. John Lyon, lived side by side in 1765. (Amherst Deed Bk. B:54)

2. JAMES TURNER (Terisha) whose will was dated 26 Nov. 1805 and proved 31 Jan. 1606 (Amherst Bk. 4:223) seems almost certain to have been the son by that name. In Rev. Edgar Woods’ History of Albemarle described as belonging to Amherst and being a considerable land owner on the lower Hardware. In the sketch on the Hamner family, the Turners are said to have lived on Totier creek near various Hamner in laws, “though the Turners soon removed to Amherst.”
James, wife was Rebecca, dau. of William Hamner of Welch descent. She d. in Nelson Co. In 1808.
13 Jan. 1781 James’ name appears in the Amherst Co. Public Service Claims (p. 11) for having furnished the Militia with three steers at a cost of 9. 15. 10. On the 1783 tax list he had 12 in his family and 11

PART II STEPHEN TURNER
1. STEPHEN TURNER: Only the degree of relationship is in doubt concerning Old Terisha
and the Stephen Turner who was of St. Anne's Parish of Albermarle Co.. Va. , 14 May 1750. when
he paid Samuel Spencer of the same parish and county (English pound sign) 10 for 248 acres on
the north side of the Fluvanna (James) river, adjoining Capt. Howard and patented by Spencer, 30
March 1743. (Deed Bk. 1:316) On 20 Sept. 1759, Stephen patented 185 A. in Albermarle, adjoining
his own land and that of Col. Allen Howard and William Cabell. (Patents #33, 1756‑1761, p. 655) He
was "of Amherst" on 9 June 1762 when he bought from John Howard of Goochland an additional
178 A. on the north side of the James adjoining William Cabell (Deed Bk. A:66) Three years later he
gave 37 A. of that land "for love borne them" to Charles Patterson and his wife Mary. (Book B:31)
Also in 1765 Samuel Spencer Sr., of Tillotson Parish. then Buckingham Co., for (English pound
sign) 10 deeded Stephen 400 A., a part of his original patent in 1746 * (Bk. B:4). In 1776 just two
years after the death of his father Dr. William. Nicholas Cabell and wife Hannah (Carrington) gave
Stephen 450 A. for 5 (English amount of money not discernible, but not a pound sign). ** (Bk. D:
348)
________________________________________________________________________________
· Samuel Spencer also patented 1200 acres in Goochland on both sides of the James river in
June, 1733.
** How Stephen was related to these various donors remains a mystery. In his will he speaks of the
original tract of land “given me by Samuel Spencer.” Since Spencer gave him more land fifteen
years later and since Stephen was twice married—to sisters—could his two wives have been
Spencer’s daughters? Was Mary, wife of Chas. Patteson,
Stephen’s dau by the first marriage?
(All children mentioned in his will were from the second.) Was Stephen himself related to the Cabells
or Carringtons?
He purchased numerous other tracts. including 270 A. on both sides of Rockfish river bought from
Old Terisha's son James in 1794. (Bk. G:458).
Stephen's name is just below Old Terisha's on p. 23 of the Amherst Co. Public Service Claims
for having furnished the following items to the Militia in 1781:
11 June 10 Dietts (sic); Express from Amherst to Albemarle for Arms and Ammunition.
13 July 32 Dietts for Militia on their march to Camp (James Harrison).
3 Dietts. I peck corn, 6 sheaves oats – Boyer’s Brigade
31 July 2‑1/4 Bushels Corn Meal for the Militia
3 Aug. 280 lbs Beef for Militia; 2‑3/4 bushels Corn Meal
Stephen appears on the 1783 tax list of Amherst with 11 whites and 23 blacks in his household. He
was taxed for 3 white males, 16 slaves, and 5 horses in 1800. (Amherst Co. Personal Property Lists.
Bk. A:17)
To quote from the last paragraph of his will. dated 29 April 1799 and proved 12 June 1801
(Amherst Bk. 4:8): "Whereas doubts have arisen relative to the legitimacy of my Children herein
Named from my having intermarried with my Present Wife, who was a Sister of my first wife, now
Dec'd. I think Proper here to observe that I (k)now recognize every Heir of the Body of the Woman
with whom I now and Have for forty years lived, the Names of whom are all inserted in this my Will
and Called my Sons and Daughters. It is my Will and desire 'that they should receive the respective
portions which I have devised to them As the Heirs of my body it being only that which I have
acquired from an honest and frugal Industry.”
In all, Stephen disposed of 39 slaves by this will and referred to previous bequests to his
daughters. The results of his "honest and frugal industry" must have been considerable, for the
bond for administration of his estate amounted to (English pound sign) 18,000. Sureties were:
Robert Rives, Nelson Anderson. James Murphy and Steven Watts. Execs named were: sons
Samuel, Terisha and John. Witnesses who proved the will were: Robert Rives, Jesse Higginbotham
and John Johnson.
Stephen's widow, Sarah, who lived for 26 years after his death, made her home for some time
with John and Sally Stevens in Nelson Co., where her will. dated 23 Feb. 1825 was proved 30 Nov.
1827. (Bk. C:392) Ch. of Stephen And his second wife. Sarah(_______) Turner, from his will:

(had son John Jr. and others)
x. Nancy m. 18 Nov. 1798 John Tindall (Tendall) of Buckingham Co., James Stevens, sec..
2. SAMUEL TURNER (Stephen) seems to me to have been the oldest of that name among
the Amherst Turners, possibly named for Samuel Spencer. His marriage is recorded 3 Aug. 1789 to
Sarah Spencer, with William Spencer as surety. He received 400 A. an the Tye river from his father,
8 Dec. 1797. (Bk. H:486) Samuel's name appears numerous times: before he was of age, as
witness to the deed in 1776 when Nicholas Cabell and wife Hannah gave his father 450 A. (Bk.
D:348); as exec of his father's will in 1801; as surety an his bro. John's guardianship bonds for the
two younger bros. (Will Bk. 4:337); to vouch for his nephew, James L. Turner, as being of legal age in
1801; as witness to the will of Old Terisha's widow, Sarah Turner, in 1806; and as trustee, with
Stephen Watts and Charles Patteson, of John Spencer's family.
Almost certain to be his is the wall, written 19 July 1829 and proved 21 Sept. 1829 (Amherst
Bk. 7:274), which does not mention a wife. Execs were William Turner and John Turner, sons, and
son in law John Dillard.
His children from the will:
8. i. John who had dau. Mary
9. ii. William S. (Spencer?) m. 21 Dec. 1829 Frances Jane Cheatwood
10. iii. Nathan unm. in 1829
11. iv. Samuel unm in 1829
12. v. Jefferson unm. In 1829
13. vi. Stephen underage in 1829
vii. Nancy Farrar 1795‑1866 m. ca 1816 John Dillard 1795-1858, son of James and Jane (Stark) Dillard: had son Samuel Turner Dillard and dau. Ann.
Very likely he is the Terisha Turner who witnessed the deed when Nicholas Cabell and wife Hannah
(Carrington) gave 450 A. to his father (Stephen Turner) in 1776. The names of both Terisha and
Samuel appear, with others. it must have been quite an occasion for those two teenage boys.
(Deed Bk. D:348)
Undoubtedly, he was the Terisha Turner Junr. who furnished a “Rifle Gun, Shot Bagg and
Powder Horn on 3 Aug. 1781 (Public Service Claims, Amherst Co. Court Booklet, p. 24): his follows
directly after the claims of Old Terisha and of Stephen. He appears next to Stephen and Old Terisha
on the Amherst Co. 1763 tax list, with four in his family. Certainly James L. and probably Cynthia
were born then. ** Terisha also signed as surety for John Stevens in 1797 when John m. his sister
Sally Turner; he was witness to his father's permission for her, as well.
______________________________________________________________________________
* The Will of James Thomas of Littleton Parish in CumberlandCo.Bk.3:169)dated 3 June 1797
and proved 25 May 1801, leaves (English pound sign) 10 to "my dau. Elizabeth Hoskins
Turner.."
** Evidently these two are the Turner (great) grandchildren mentioned in the 1792 Amherst will
of Lucy Thomas Nevil Childress, mother of James Thomas; she and Jarvis Harding
witnessed the permission for her granddaughter Elizabeth to marry Terisha in 1780.
As Terisha Turner Junr. on the personal property Hot for 1800, he was taxed for 1 white male. 2
negroes and 2 horses. (His eldest son, James L. and his father. Stephen, were listed beneath him.)
(p. 17 of A‑1800)
Quoting from Stephen's will, written in 1799: "7th ‑ ‑I give to my son Terisha Turner the land
whereon he now lives bounded as follows: all the land which I own on the North side of Ivy Creek,
then crossing the creek the upper side of Cabello Line.. all which Lands inclusive on both sides the
Creek I give to him and his heirs forever. . " * Recorded in Nelson Co. Deed Bk. 4:44. 27 Dec. 1820.
Terisha Turner and wife Elia, of Nelson sold to Gilbert Bowman 250 A. for S225O. "resurveyed on 15
Feb. 1804, by Joseph C. Higginbotham...south side of Rockfish and Ivy Creek ... lines of Nichols
Cabell and William Bowman. " Terisha's bequests in 1840 mention land purchased by him from
Samuel Turner, Etc. . as trustees, for John Spencer. also land conveyed to him by (his bro. in law)
James Stevens and Eliz., his wife; and land purchased from Robert Rives, etc.
In his will dated 11 May 1840 and proved 22 March 1841, Terisha called himself "far
advanced in Years. " It is a lengthy document, containing a lengthy codicil written the same day and
showing much partiality. He provided for his "beloved wife" in the event she should survive him. but
failed to give her name. The first bequest was to the four children, also unnamed, of his deceased
son, James L., to be paid after two years

following Terisha's death. There was no affection for his sons Samuel and William, the latter having
"left the country.” A trust was provided for his “unfortunate” son John. Obviously the favorite was his
younger dau. Narcissa. Execs were: sons Lemuel and Stephen, son in law James S. Dillard, and
grandson Terisha W. Dillard. Witnesses were Spotswood Garland and A. G. Loving. Robert Rives
was surety for the admr. bond of $80. 000.
The will of his widow, “r elict of Terisha Turner," signed Elizabeth H. Turner, was written 28
Feb. 1843 and proved 22 Dec. 1845. (Nelson Co. Bk. G:194) She described herself as "old and
feeble. " Her son, Lemuel, with whom she was living, received her entire estate.
Children of Terisha and Elizabeth H. (Thornas) Turner, from his will:
14. i. James L. m. 1801 Sarah Campbell
15. ii. Stephen unm. d. 1860 Nelson Co.
16. iii. Lemuel unm. d. 1879 Nelson Co.
17. iv. William

vii. Cynthia m. Elisha Peters; rec'd land in Bedford Co.
viii. Narcissa E. m. James S. Dillard of Nelson Co.,; had sons, Terisha W.. James S,
and prob. John T. Dillard.
4. JOHN TURNER (Stephen) served as guardian for his younger bros., Fleming and
Francis W. S., with bro. Samuel as surety on his bond.
(Will Bk. 4:337, 19 Oct. 1801) He was perhaps the John Turner of Shelby Co. , Tenn., whose will was written 24 Aug. 1827 and proved in April 1832. (Bk. 1‑C:36) He mentioned his wife Elizabeth, and the following children.
19. i. Twasher (Terisha)
ii. Sally (Sarah) Coffee
iii. Polly (Mary) Read
20. iv. James
v. Betty (Elizabeth) Linsey (Lindsay). dec'd. by 1827. Leaving two ch.
21. vi. William L.
Wife Elizabeth and Kader Harrell were “commissioners" of the will. Wit: Charles H. Stone. James R.
Harrell, Jacobb F. Eilett (Aylett).
6. FLEMING TURNER( Stephen ) was witness to the will of Howard Bacon of Albemarle on
11 Dec. I805 and proved it in Dec., 1807. (Bk. 4:315) In Dec. 1836 his name appeared as security
for the marriage of Jane M. Turner and John T. Lindsay in Shelby Co. , Tenn. There is no will or
administration for him In that county, and it is not known when or where he died.
7. FRANCIS W. S. TURNER (Stephen) was perhaps named for William Spencer and
evidently was the youngest son of Stephen and Sarah (______ ) Turner. He and bro. Fleming were
still minors in 1801 when their father died.
His will (Nelson, Co. Bk. J-156), written 10 June 1841 and proved 28 June 1852, mentions his
beloved wife Mary E. and the following children:
i. June R. m. William H. Carter
22. ii. William A.
23. iii. Francis S.
24. iv. Joseph H.
v. Sarah F. m._________Curee (?)
N. F. Cabell was trustee for the dau. Sarah and ch; Francis’ three sons were execs: H. B. Scott,
Samuel Scott and Isham T. Smith.
14. JAMES L. TURNER (Terisha, Stephen) eldest son of Terisha and Elizabeth Hoskins
(Thomas) Turner, listed beneath his father and grandfather. was taxed for himself and a horse on
the Amherst Personal Property List of 1800. (Book A, p. 17). His uncle Samuel Turner declared him
to be "of the age of twenty‑one or upward" on 12 March 1801, the date , of his marriage bond to
Sarah, dau. of Laurence Campbell Sr. of Amherst. Spotswood Garland was surety. Her father's
permission was witnessed by her bro. in law, Richard Waugh. and by Samuel Turner.
James L. had War of 1812 service in Col. James Cartmill's regt. as a private and sergeant in
Capt. Robt. Kyle’s company of Va. Militia in 1813 and in Capt. Hamilton's Co., in 1814, for which his
widow received 40 and 120 A. of bounty land in 1851 and 1855 (#169227: WT 91436).
A letter from his granddau says that James L. was a lawyer, and it seems quite likely. In 1792
his great grandmother, Lucy Thomas Nevil Childress. made a bequest of (English pound sign) 100
for his schooling (and willed him a negro woman, a feather bed and furniture, and a bay ware.)
(Amherst Bk. 3: ) Botetourt Co. records contain deeds, dating from 10 July 1811 to 2 Jan. 1823, in
which James L. Turner appeared as Trustee of property to secure debts between various
individuals.
In April. 1812. James L. purchased several lots an the north side of Main Street in Fincastle
for $750 (Recorded Bk. 14:515), which he and Sarah sold in part for $1120 in Feb. 1813. (Bk.
10:605). In Nov. 1819 he bought a house and lot. (Bk. 14. 370). He evidently served as Deputy
Sheriff in Oct. 1815S, for which he furnished a $10. 000 bond. (Bk. 19:785).
Nevertheless, his family suffered financial difficulties. In Laurence Campbell's will, written 8
Jan. 1813 (Amherst Bk. 5:535) is found: "to my daughter Sally Turner one eighth part to her. etc ...
she first paying to my Estate (English pound sign) 100 which I am bound to pay for her Husband,
James L. Turner which includes a Debt due to David and Jas. Garland. " The panic of 1818 probably
didn't help matters.
In his own will. written 23 Jan. 1823 just before his death on the 28th (Botetourt Co. Bk.
C:383) James L. directed his execs to pay his debts as soon as profitable “firmly believing that the….
property herein directed to be sold will be adequate to the payment of my Debt. I am consoled at this
last period of my life in believing that my Creditors sacrifice my little Estate to the utter ruin and
destruction of a helpless family, but that they will await a time when the most can be made of it by
which reason alone they can be paid. My Beds, furniture, etc. , I request shall be retained for the
use of my Family, unless the absolute payment of Debts makes a sale necessary.” The will is brief
and mentions only “my affectionate wife, Sally, and my children”--- no names.
Sarah Turner, widow of James L. continued to live in Fincastle for several years. In the
obituary of their oldest son is found this paragraph: "... his father died... leaving a widow, three sons
and a daughter surviving him. Lucius was the oldest and upon him devolved the care of his mother
and the younger children. . . " (Lucius signed as guardian of his only sister when she m. Francis T.
Belt in Botetourt Co.. in 1827) "He came to Illinois (St. Clair Co.) with his mother and other
members of the family in the autumn of 1831 and settled on a farm north of Belleville, having been
attracted here by encouraging letters from the West and Mitchell families, who had left Va. a few
years previous. (1817)”
After the death of Dr. Belt (1833, Estate file A-172, St. Clair Co, Illinois), Sarah Turner lived
with her dau. in Lebanon, Illinois. Her name appears in that household in the 1850 and 1640 census.
Her bounty land application for the War of 1812 was witnessed by L. D. Turner and H. C. Belt, 28 Sept.
1851, and again on 10 May 1855 by L.. D. Turner and Helen C. Hypes, with an affidavit by James
Mitchell. She is said to be buried in College Hill cemetery in Lebanon, but her tombstone has not
been found. Neither has the exact date of her death been determined.
